The Quins 2007/08 official charity, Wooden Spoon, is rugby's charity supporting mentally, physically and socially disadvantaged children and young people. Spoon has committed to over £13 million in spending for projects for children and young people. It has organised over 2,000 events and had over 25,000 ties worn by its loyal members and supporters. Hardworking staff and volunteers have achieved all of this since the birth of the charity.
With 44 regional committees including three national committees, Scotland, Wales and Ireland and more than 11,000 members, Spoon has become a national charity but one working very much at a local level where all funds raised locally are spent locally.
Spoon’s strength and purpose has been to convert the funds derived from fundraising activities to benefit socially, mentally or physically disadvantaged children and young people. Spoon supports work that addresses a wide range of social problems as well as physical illnesses and disabilities including cancer, cystic fibrosis and autism. Spoon has a positive impact on disability in all its forms.
Here in Middlesex, in recent months, Spoon has made a number of significant grants to local schools – including £30,000 to Richmond House, (a unit in Hampton Community College for children with emotional and behavioral problems) for a multi-sports playing surface, £20,000 for “Spoon Island”, a play area at Coteford School in Pinner, and £100,000 towards a 6th Form Centre at Grove Park Special School in Edgware.
Harlequins Chief Executive, Mark Evans said: “We are delighted to be supporting the main charity of rugby and enjoying developing a good working relationship with them. We hope to help raise a significant amount of money for the worthwhile causes they support.”
Gordon Brown, Wooden Spoon’s voluntary Chairman of the Middlesex Region, said: “We are delighted to be appointed Quins official charity for this Season as we enter our 25th year of supporting disadvantaged children. All funds raised through Quins events and endeavours will be spent locally on projects to “stir smiles” for disadvantaged children throughout Middlesex and surrounds.”
