Programme Notes 2009/10
Saracens
I warned you last week that we can expect some more fall-out from the summer’s events and last week’s loss to the Tigers here at the Twickenham Stoop was just another stage in the penance we are due to pay according to some observers. Watching Jeremy Staunton slot those kicks over was below the belt.
Perhaps the natural order of things has decreed that Bath and Quins must prop up the table for a while this season. We are not expecting an easy ride from any of the opposition obviously but we could do with some cheer sometime soon. Please let that be today.
It was a hastily re-arranged line-up last weekend that included some “A” team players for their first taste of top-flight rugby. I thought that they all did well in the circumstances and that we have some “stars” of the future lurking down there. In fact if you are in need of some feel-good-factor then I recommend a Monday night out at the “A” team games. The commitment and passion makes for some exciting rugby in a relaxed atmosphere, so make it your regular Monday night out and you won’t be disappointed.
I enjoyed seeing one of our old academy and “A” team players making his mark last weekend. Playing for the Falcons, Charlie Amesbury chased a kick downfield that looked well covered by the defence but forced them to cough it up and provide the try of the day. That was their second draw in two games and they are our opponents next week. It’s not one of our favourite trips away and we have a poor record up there in the frozen north. I’ll be going for my first ever visit to Kingston Park and I hope I’m not alone. Let’s hope that Charlie is off the boil that night but that he gets to see and hear a few of us. It’s not that far is it?
As to today’s opponents I’m told that they have changed their flag, their song and their nationality. A warm welcome to the supporters of “S.A.racens” in their Fez attire (not changed the hats then?). No camel racing allowed at the Stoop either. Our turf is as hallowed as Wembley’s. It must be a little strange to be playing your games anywhere except your home stadium but no doubt we’ll be there at Elton’s Garden Shed Stadium in April, unless the local council has condemned it by then.
If you haven’t renewed your membership for this season then you can do it today at our stand in the Etihad stand before the game. New members are also welcome to sign up at the same venue.
I’m keen to have photographs of supporters to accompany this article so if you’ve got some suitable ones then please send them to me at steve@quinssa.org.uk and see yourself and friends in the programme. Photos from away games are especially welcome.
Quinssa have, as usual, arranged for coaches to most away games and the first of these is to Cardiff on the 10th October. For bookings see us in the Etihad stand before KO today or go to coaches@quinssa.org.uk
