Programme Notes 2009/10
Leicester Tigers
It would have been an easy option to write about all things red and the injustice of some refereeing decisions last week but I’ll try and keep it all in perspective. It has been a tough few months for all of us who support the Harlequins and it’s probably not over yet. We are certain of plenty of banter and stick from opposing fans trying to wind us up for many months to come but the reality of being a loyal supporter is that we will suffer it and still turn out to cheer our team.
The boys showed last week that there is plenty of skill and desire to win even with the odds stacked against them and they deserve our backing at every opportunity. The “A” team performance on Monday night demonstrated the strength in depth we have now and the quality of our future players. Being a loyal supporter does not mean that we have to agree with everything the club does, nor should we fail to condemn unsporting behaviour. Many fans have aired their collective views on the incident and it shows that we were as shocked as the rest of the rugby world. The healing has to start sometime and today would be a good one for us to show that the spirit of Harlequins will survive and we will not waiver in our belief and passion for our chosen team.
Some of you reading this may be new to the club and uncertain of your choice but hopefully the whole matchday experience will reassure you that we are a good club with strong values and great supporters. If you want to get involved even more then joining Quinssa (Quins Supporters Association) would be a good start. We operate a stand at every home game and you’ll find us on the back wall of the bar beneath the Etihad (East) stand. Come along and find out more.
So today we welcome the supporters of last season’s champions, Leicester Tigers, for what promises to be a tough encounter. I’m sure that they are keen to get a first win today but for us it’s vital that we start to put the past behind us and get the smiles back on all our faces. The team will have to do the talking on the field but they need us to raise the roof at every opportunity and maximise our home advantage.
One of the highlights for me last season was the increasing numbers of travelling Quins supporters who made it to the away games. The players often tell us that the sound made by the fans at these games was the difference between winning and losing. Your attendance at any away game will be beneficial to the team and could make all the difference to our league position next May.
Quinssa have, as usual, arranged for coaches to most away games and the first of these is to Cardiff on the 10th October. Go to coaches@quinssa.org.uk for bookings or see us in the Etihad stand before KO. Coaches leave from the Stoop and usually include a stop for lunch at a pub close to the away ground.
Finally, if you happen to run into me today in the bar then you can do two things. Firstly you can buy me a pint because it’s my birthday and second you can remind me that it’s my wedding anniversary in 2 days’ time.
