Programme Notes 2009/10

Leeds Carnegie

This time last season we occupied a different part of the universe. Play-off position in the Premiership beckoned, and a semi-final in the HC with home advantage was about to commence. My article was full of praise for the team and mentioned how they were spilling blood in the cause! That was a little too prophetic as it turned out and the season turned sour from then on in.

Now where are we 12 months later? Hanging on to mid table but still needing a win to ensure survival. Unlikely to be contending in the senior European cup next season and little else to savour. But such is the life of a Quins’ supporter and we stick it out because that is what being a true fan is all about. Not for us the near certainty of a top four position each season nor automatic qualification for the HC.

I for one would love to see Andy Gomarsall playing today if only to have the chance to thank him for his prior service to the club. Hopefully he will be recovered from his recent injury and we’ll get to see his trade-mark passion and leadership. With or without Andy, Leeds have shown themselves capable of beating almost any team in recent months and this is no certainty for Quins. Let’s welcome the Leeds team and supporters as we always do but be loud and passionate in support of our boys.

Today has a little unusual, but not unknown, flavour to it with the two games to be played. I admit to being a casual observer of the RL team and a rare attendee at their games. I reported on the first RL, game played here which was against today’s opposition St Helens. It seemed almost foreign to a delicate Home Counties lad like me. With supporters from both sides of the Pennines here today we’ll have to hope that there’s no left-overs from the Wars-of-the-Roses.

Quinssa is delighted to confirm that its Summer Party this year will be held at the Twickenham Stoop Stadium on 5th June. Booking forms went out with the recent newsletters. The Quinssa AGM will be held during the event and there will be some additional encouragement to attend this part.

With entry fee of only £6 per head (children under 12 free), we will have use of the members’ bar, there will be lots of activities on the pitch and everyone gets a free meal from Ollie Kohn’s famous Jolly Hog & Sausage catering emporium.  This is going to be another fantastic Quinssa day out, so make sure you put it in your diary NOW!

For more information, or to make a provisional booking, head to the Quinssa Stand, situated in the Kings Bar under the Etihad Stand. Additional information is available at www.quinssa.org.

Another event to put in the diary is an evening Race Meeting at Windsor on Monday 23rd August. The club and Quinssa are working together on this event which should help kick-off the new season with a social event. We’re hopeful that some players will be attending too. More news to follow.

We already have 2 full coaches for the trip to Wembley for the Saracens game on Saturday 17th April. The last coach of the season is to Leicester and you’ll need to be quick if you want to go. For bookings see us in the King’s Bar before home games at the Stoop or contact coaches@quinssa.org.uk
