Programme Notes 2008/9
Saracens
They say that sometimes it is better to travel hopefully than to arrive. Last Saturday was just such a journey for the fearless band of Quins’ supporters who travelled to Bristol. Expectation was high, the sun was shining gloriously, the “oppo” fans were predicting a humiliation for them and five points in the league for us. What more could we have asked for in the circumstances?
Well a game of rugby would have been nice to witness. Whilst it seemed that neither team could muster much enthusiasm for the contest I thought that perhaps the strong sunlight was affecting our boys in the way a rabbit is by headlights. Did they stop for a big fry-up on the way down followed by some left-over Christmas pudding? What was happening in the scrum and why couldn’t the ref sort it out? Mysteries all to me and many of the modest crowd. At least when we went to uncontested scrums we saw some lively passages of running rugby. Chalk that one down to a poor day on the entertainment register and a missed bonus point. Hopefully it was a wake-up for the rest of the season and encouragement for everyone here today to cheer their heads off and encourage them to a well worked victory over our visitors from Watford.
Doing the double over the Fez heads would be special as it might be the last time we play them as they are known today. Next time round they could be the “Almost-In-London- South-Africans” or the “Boks-of-Fulham”. The funny hats and wiggling fingers could be consigned to the bin of famous old rugby clubs and the shirt is bound to change to one of green. Don’t rush to feel sorry for them just yet as the team have some points to make to the management and no doubt they will be fired up today in much the same way Bristol gave us a fright last week.
Training this week will have dislodged any pudding from last week we hope and we’ll be treated to a thrilling encounter full of passion, drama and a well deserved win for Quins. If they are going to display passion on the field then we all need to show just as much passion in our support this afternoon.
I had hoped to complete this article with news of a thrilling “A” Team win against Northampton Wanderers last Monday night in the semi-final game at the Stoop. However it seemed that the same left-over Xmas pud has been consumed by the whole squad. Whatever our failings you had to accept that the Wanderers had more in the tank on the night and deserved their win. Good luck to them in the final.
The next Quinssa event is the “Meet the Academy” on the 19th March in the members bar at 7pm. Free entry for Quinssa members and only £3 for non-members.
The next coach will be to Bath on the 4th April. coaches@quinssa.org.uk for bookings.
