Programme Notes 2008/9
Newcastle Falcons
Given the disappointment of the last two weeks it would be easy to forget the season as a whole. From a supporter’s point of view this has been an exhilarating season with plenty of highs, unexpected wins on the road and now the prospect of an extra game or two.
If you are one of the regular travellers to away games you will have clocked a good few miles by now but you will have enjoyed some really great trips. Away wins at Bath, Bristol, Worcester (twice), Saracens, Llanelli and of course Paris. No doubt the wallet has taken a hammering but you’ve had some fun and met with liked minded people where ever you’ve been. It would be great if we could build a larger mass of away fans for these trips now that we can expect to win quite a few times away from the Stoop. In my early years supporting Quins an away win was almost as rare as hen’s teeth and some seasons even rarer. Nowadays we have a good chance to win every game we play. Perhaps next season we can win at other tough grounds too but it will help greatly if we can take a bigger crowd with us to each match.
Here’s an “end-of-season” resolution for all Harlequins supporters: “I will travel to some/more away games next season and enjoy watching us win on the road”.
Today’s game is about as big as it gets in the Premiership with so many permutations possible for those coveted top four places. It’s almost too complicated and all I’m interested in right now is a good win for Quins today. The other games will only impact on us if we don’t do well ourselves against a Falcons team that has been a trifle mercurial of late. Others jostling for the top may have easier or tougher games today but we need the right result to do justice to the season and reward the team as well as the fans. Fingers crossed, toes crossed, just cross whatever you need to, pray to your God, tell the ref that you think he’s a golly good chap, cheer, sing, shout (except when kickers are aiming at goal) do anything legal and decent to make sure we have at least one more home game this season.
Don’t forget to keep Saturday 13th June free for the Quinssa Summer Party. Booking forms have been emailed to members and tickets are available today on the Quinssa stand which you’ll find in the usual place in the bar of the Etihad stand. A modest fee buys you food and entertainment all afternoon. Non-members are welcome to attend and kids are free within reason.
If it all pans out today there will be no need for another coach this season. But, just in case they are needed, we have all bases covered and arrangements are in place to run one or more coaches to the play-off we might find ourselves headed for once today’s games are over. coaches@quinssa.org.uk for bookings.
This might be my last oracle for this season in which case I wish you all a happy closed season and look forward to seeing you on the 13th June down at Richmond RFC. Hopefully I’ll have to find some words once more for our first ever home play-off.
