Programme Notes 2008/9
Llanelli Scarlets
Happy New Year to all Quinssa members and those Quins supporters who are yet to join. You could keep one New Year resolution by signing up today at the Quinssa stand which you’ll find in the bar in the Etihad stand. Anyone who has to collect their tickets for the Quinssa 6N Dinner should do so before the game today from the same location. And a very big thank you to all of you who contributed to the gifts for the children at the Shooting Star hospice. Several members of the team were on hand to help distribute them and Emma writes:
“Well, the Quins boys did us proud again at the Shooting Star over 5’s Christmas party the other week. About a dozen of them turned up (bearing in mind most of the squad were travelling up to Northampton that day) including David Strettle, Gary Botha, Steve So’oialo, John Brooks, Alex Rogers and several of the Academy boys.
Shooting Star’s Chief Executive came and introduced himself and expressed how extremely grateful they were for Quinssa's continued support and Jan Buckingham and many of the nurses did the same.
The Quins guys were brilliant with the kids – lots of photographs and autographs and plenty of smiles were put on some very special faces throughout the afternoon. So a big thank you to everyone who made a donation.”
It seems a long time since our last game at the Stoop and with the match against Worcester falling victim to the weather these notes are merely an update on the ones I wrote a few weeks ago. Much has happened since Christmas and we have a great deal to look forward to over the next few months, not least a game in the knock-out stages of the Heineken Cup for the first time in many years.
Whatever your views on the colour pink you have to admit that it was a lucky colour for Quins throughout December. Two games playing opposition wearing it and one game when we wore it ourselves. They say that you make your own luck in life but I reckon you need to take risks to really succeed and the Big Game was a gamble that paid off handsomely for the club even if you only measure it in column inches generated in the papers.
The management must be congratulated for taking the chance to move us into a new era and for persuading the team to produce such a stunning finish. The Pests did their best to copy Quins with their so called “Battle of the Capitals” although “Wycombe v Dublin” doesn’t sound as good as ”London v Paris”. And as for the “London v Belfast” encounter last week my thoughts were with the players, staff and supporters who endured the worst of everything the weather could throw at them and officials who seemed to be suffering some sort of brain freeze for parts of the game. Let’s hope for a warmer climate all round today except for a chill in the Scarlets team coach as they head back to the valleys tonight. The team appreciate your support throughout the game so cheer and shout encouragement all afternoon for the survivors of last week’s artic wastes.
Today is the closest home game to Nick Duncombe’s birthday and, as usual, Quinssa will lay flowers on his memorial in the north west corner of the ground. A memorial stone has also been laid over the road in HQ.
The next coach will be to London Irish on the 14th February. Treat your loved one to a grand day out on St Valentine’s Day and you’ll be reminded of it for ever. coaches@quinssa.org.uk for bookings.
