Programme Notes 2007/8

Newcastle Falcons

I do hope that when Deano writes his memoirs he explains what went on during the Coaches’ meetings this season. I would be fascinated to know whether the perceived change in playing style we’ve seen, was always intended for this season, but delayed due to injuries, or whether a change was called for during the dark days of December/January. Whichever it was, it was the correct one, because it certainly suits the squad and it certainly suits us sitting in the Stands. I’m getting to the stage where I don’t want to make forecasts for the rest of the season in case I jinx it.  After Gloucester, the Bath victory was almost expected, but Bristol last week demonstrated that the team is full of confidence. The Memorial Ground has been a bit of a fortress since Bristol bounced back from ND1 and many, especially their supporters, could not see us getting much out of the game. I wasn’t able to attend the match [Lightweight! I hear you scream], but the Easter Eggs tasted even better that evening!

The match against Newcastle today will be fascinating for a number of reasons, not least the mystery of why a team that included three, possibly four, of the England back-line during the Six Nations has under-performed as a team this season. I’m also interested financially because they are now sponsored by the tax payer, through Northern Rock, and I understand we also own their stadium, so we all have a vested interest in them doing well, although not today!

While I have your attention, don’t forget the “More Affordable Do” (MAD) on Thursday 24th April. The event will take place at the Twickenham Stoop (King’s Bar, Etihad Stand) from 7.30pm until 12.30am. Tickets at only £55 are available for purchase from Emma (rugbybird@quinssa.org.uk) and are selling very well. Every table will include a player, who I’m certain are looking forward to hearing your views on why they missed that crucial tackle, or butchered another chance. Don’t forget this is open to all supporters and their guests and promises to be a great evening.

Quinssa are also delighted to advise that Wayne Barnes will be hosting a Meet The Referee evening in the Members Clubhouse on Wednesday 30th April from 7.30pm.  Geraint Ashton Jones will also be talking about his role at Harlequins so it promises to be a great evening. Quinssa will be making a donation to The Wooden Spoon Society at Wayne’s request and will also be running a raffle for the charity.

I have also been asked to let you know that Jason's Leopards are looking for players to join them at this year’s Fat Blokes 7s in Reading, over the weekend of the 18th-20th July. The Leopards are made up of Harlequins supporters, and play once a year against similar teams, with an emphasis on the social and fun side of the game. If you are interested in playing or would like more information contact the Leopards at domgreen@live.co.uk.

I’m sure you will be keen to be at the all the remaining Quins’ fixtures this season, so why not travel on the Quinssa coach? Contact coaches@quinssa.org.uk or come to the Quinssa table in the Etihad Stand to make a booking.
