Programme Notes 2006/7

Worcester Warriors

Isn’t it amazing? After a four match unbeaten run, including a tremendous result in a cold wet Newcastle last Friday, Quins have still failed to win one game this season. Fortunately for us, however, all our opponents in those last four matches lost theirs. Well that is what you would think if you read some of the reports and comments after each result. I know that whether “we win” or “they lose” has no bearing on the league points awarded, but wouldn’t it be nice to read that “the Quins’ pack dominated” or the “Quins’ backs cut loose” rather than a reference to “injury-hit Newcastle” or “a poor Saints’ display”. Will the coaches never get the credit they deserve; or the players not be told that they won because they were only playing the fat wheezy boys in the 4th team.

Please don’t think I’m getting paranoid. I’m sure it’s not a Quins’ thing, but a “league position” thing. Teams at the top of the table beat teams at the bottom. Conversely, if the result goes against them, they lose, because it must have been self-inflicted. Supporters are no different. At Newcastle we were in conversation with a friendly group of locals, who whilst volunteering that the Falcons were not at their best, excused it with the fact that they had Wilkinson, Tait and Flood missing. Fortunately, in my view, we were able to trump them with Mehrtens, Abbot and Luscombe, but I’m sure you get my point.

Some of you will remember last year’s Toy Appeal, organised by Quinssa at the request of Plymouth Albion. This resulted in the presentation of your gifts to local Plymouth hospitals prior to our visit last December. Well, Quinssa and the Club have now agreed a joint venture to donate toys, contributed by Quins’ supporters, to our own local hospitals. One of the main recipients will be the Shooting Star children’s hospice in Teddington, which I’m sure you will agree is a very deserving cause and we hope you will find time to root though your cupboards for suitable toys or even donate new ones. Players visiting these hospitals in mid-December will present these gifts. Both the Club and Quinssa will be providing further information, including collection points, in due course.

Another worthy cause is the British Heart Foundation and you will recall a couple of weeks ago that Saints’ supporter, James Bruce, adopted Quins for the Saints With Heart walk which he completed in a Quins shirt, donated by the Club, and raised over £1,300 in sponsorship. This shirt has been signed by both squads and will now be auctioned off to the highest bidder to raise more funds for BHF.  More information will be available in due course.

The next Quinssa event will be on Wednesday 22nd November in the Members' Clubhouse The Twickenham Stoop at 7.30pm and will be a Meet the Academy Evening with Tony Diprose, Collin Osborne and some of the Academy members, including those that Quinssa have been able to send to Natal.

There’s no doubt that the Stoop is becoming a noisier place to be. Players are also commenting on what a difference that is making to their performance. Fortress Stoop is not far away and as we rise up the table we can look forward to seeing Quins win their matches, rather than having to rely on our visitors losing …….  if you get me?.
