Programme Notes 2005/6

Doncaster

So after four weeks of the season we are have four wins to our name, three of them on the road. Quite a lot of fans journeyed up to Nottingham and partook fully in the festive fayre offered at Ireland Avenue. The lineout performed very well and only an outbreak of Teflon coated hands amongst the backs marginally took some of the gloss from the day. It’s good to see so many fans travelling to away games, the gate was about 50% up on usual and was the largest of the weekend despite there being a west country derby.

Today we welcome Doncaster to the Twickenham Stoop and hope they enjoy their day down south. Doncaster, after being promoted, finally kick started their campaign with an impressive win last week after wobbling a bit earlier on.

Reflecting back a little on the Newbury match, wasn’t the ground looking impressive? There’s the bronze statue of Nick Duncombe in the northwest corner, which is well worth a look and the new members' bar was doing a roaring trade. The shop has also moved and that too was packed. There’s still a few jobs to be finished here and there so please be patient. Just remember it was only a short while ago that one side of the ground was a complete tip and that was before they demolished the old west stand.

Quinssa run coaches where practicable to away games. Our coach supremo John is taking bookings for all forthcoming matches. Full details are available from our web site on quinssa.org.uk or by visiting our desk in the East stand before the game. To give you a little taster, Coventry is being offered at £18 to Quinssa members and Rotherham at an amazing £20.

Our first big social event of the year is a [meet the management evening on Thursday 6th October at The Twickenham Stoop], the second one is a meet the coaches evening taking place on Thursday 17th November at The Stoop with the interesting pairing of John Kingston and Andy Friend. Full details will appear on our website.

Now I’ve been asked to mention a few things about acceptable behaviour when watching the game. Now I know that the ground rules appeared elsewhere in the programme but please have some respect for those sitting around you. I realise that there was a first day of term feel to things last time and that the gates going across the tunnel did catch a few people out. So you need to leave plenty of time to get to your seat at the start of both halves and you might have to walk behind the Lexus stand to get there. Do you really need to get up every so often to get another beer? Bring several back, if you have to, or wait for significant gaps in play before you leave your seat. Please don’t smoke pitch side. Someone’s afternoon’s entertainment can easily be ruined so if you have to smoke either wait for half time and go to a standing area or possibly even, wait for the end of the game.

In closing there seems to be some hog wash written in press about our wealthy club and the rich stars that we have imported. All one of them. I only wish a few of those journos were at Nottingham. Then they would have witnessed an injured Andrew Mehrtens signing autographs and posing with fans until they were all done. Well done the other players who mingled around as well.

So enjoy the day, visit our stand before the game in the East stand, make full use of the facilities and cheer the lads on.
