Programme Notes 2005/6

Newbury

A new stand, a new ground name, a tie up with Broncos coming, a new head coach, these are changing times at the Twickenham Stoop Stadium. A big welcome to everyone today whether you are a regular, an away supporter or some one who has just dropped by out of curiosity.

Today we welcome our near neighbours Newbury to our first home game of the season. Newbury have made a perky start to their campaign having a win and a one point loss to show from their first two games after being promoted at the end of last season.

If you haven’t quite made it to either of our away games so far, let me summarise. Against Pertemps Bees we played only so-so but won comfortably, it was a lovely day and we were warmly welcomed and the pork rolls were to die for! Last week we mugged Otley with a late late try from Mel Deane (did you notice his reaction to scoring?!). I wouldn’t rush out and buy the DVD of this game just yet, although the extras, if they include Deano’s “chats” could be collectable.

Quinssa have been busy since the end of last season. Our committee has slightly changed with the addition of the follicly challenged legal brain of Cliff and the west countryman Rob joining us. With three trips to the south west to come, Rob has been teaching us a few things, unfortunately, I haven’t got much further than sardines and pasties at the moment.

Travel is one of our main activities and here we are in mid–September our coach supreme has already run four trips which included two coaches going to Pertemps Bees. If you haven’t been on a Quinssa coach, it is after all an excellent way to meet other fans, then contact John via our desk in the East stand before the game or visit our web site at www.quinssa.org.uk for full details. Forthcoming trips include table topping Nottingham, Coventry and Rotherham, who may or may not be called Earth Titans. I must be going to seed as I can’t turf out the answer (Oh, stop groaning!).

Quinssa run a range of entertaining events throughout the season, our season’s line up is being confirmed at the moment, the first big event at the Stoop is Thursday November 17th. More details will appear in the Doncaster programme and on our web site at www.quinssa.org.uk There’s plenty on or website, including a brief idiot’s guide to all the ND1 grounds and details on how to get some absolutely fabulous Quinssa merchandise, some never out of date calendars and those must have Thunderstix.

Quinssa are heavily involved in supporting Quins academy. Last week we announced in the regular e-maling to our members the “Harlequins Academy Exchange Programme with Natal Sharks, supported by Quinssa”. One of the four youngsters we have financially assisted has played in both league games this season, and that’s Jordan Turner-Hall who’s a hunking 17 year old.

So, enjoy the game and make full use of the facilities both before and after the game. Whilst we look forward to events it’s also pertinent to reflect back on the past and there’s the unveiling today of the Nick Duncombe statue. A chance, perhaps, to put a few things into perspective, I’ll be at the Quinssa desk before the game so pop along for a chat.
