Programme Notes 2004/5

Worcester Warriors

Today we welcome the supporters, team and management for their first ever ZP league game at The Stoop. Ever since our heavy defeat at Sixways in early October the return game has been eagerly anticipated. There’s a whole lot of connections between both sides. It’s also the first return to The Stoop for Pat Sanderson since he left us last summer to go west.

Still smiling

Well even the most optimistic fan didn’t predict our astonishing demolition of Gloucester. The try bonus point secured right at the death could well prove crucial come the end of the season. It was all the more praiseworthy as we went into the game with one healthy hooker and one fit number ten. There were stand out performances all round and a big return from Jim Evans after a horrid injury.

Close finish

With five sides battling it out at the wrong end of the table, there’s going to be a lot of chopping and changing before the end of the season.  Apart from losing players to internationals there’s the extra games some sides still have to play. Leeds are still in two cups, Irish, Saints and Worcester in one. That’s three extra games for Leeds and two for Worcester. If things go the wrong way (so to speak) it could mean our game at Leeds in April being rearranged. The other side to all this is that with it being so close and the next two sides being not that far away, qualification for the Heineken Cup could still be possible through the wild card playoffs.

Congratulations to …

Ex-Quin and recently emigrated Ben Gollings who became the leading points scorer on the IRB 7s circuit; to Ugo Monye for try of the month against Leicester on Sky’s rugby club (“like a knife through butter!”) and to Gavin Duffy for his second cap for Ireland and for scoring on his home debut. Well done to all three.

A bit of trivia

For those of you looking forward to the next World Cup in 2007 might not realise that the competition started three months ago with Brazil winning in Venezuela, it’s a very long haul from there though.

Work in progress

If you’re new to the ground or returning after a long absence then you might just notice that there’s a long hoarding down one side of the ground. Nice isn’t it? Give it a few more months and there will be a bright new shiny stand there. Perhaps we ought to have a competition for its name? Nothing as dull as the new West Stand though please! On a serious point, it’s part of the club’s commitment to improving facilities here at The Stoop. It really wont be long before this is the best purpose built club rugby ground in the country.

What’s Quinssa?

Quinssa is the independent fans organisation now just two months away from our second birthday. We’ve a web site at www.quinssa.org.uk packed with information. It was recently redesigned and new content is being added all the time. Quinssa primarily organise away travel, arrange a host of social events, support the club and raise a fair bit for charity along the way. So why not join us? Visit our table in the East Stand before the game (we’re near the bar!) to meet some of us and buy one of those fantastic Quinssa calendars.

Quinssa travel

The next coach trip to an away game is against Bath on Saturday Feb 26th. See our website for details or contact John Hartley on coaches@quinssa.org.uk.  They really are an experience and it’s a good way to meet like minded fans.

Have a great day, try to stay in your seat during the game and if you have to leave early, please be very aware of those who sit right at the front. Now let’s hear some noise! Come on you Quins!
