Saturday 18th October 2004: v Gloucester

Balloons, Travel and lots of Fun

A big welcome to the players, management and fans of Gloucester for the middle leg of three consecutive home games. Gloucester had a good win in some style last week and will be tough opposition today. Quins kept their good start chugging on with a hard fought win against Newcastle.

When I first started to watch Quins, you could turn up thirty minutes before kick off, get a pork roll and coffee, a quick beer and be in your seat before the game started. In those days we had crowds of barely two thousand. Now things are a little different. Arriving these days not long after midday there’s plenty to do and see. But in this time, the length of the game still hasn’t changed. It’s the prime reason to be here, so please can someone explain to me why a very small minority of fans find it necessary to arrive in their seats so late, disappear ten minutes before half time and arrive back ten minutes into the second half? It causes so much annoyance to both home and visiting fans. Perhaps we should introduce theatre style rules in front of the main stands, such as no movement when the ball is live? Just a thought.

Quinnsa have a couple of events to announce. As you might of read last week we are running an Academy evening on Thursday 30th October at 7pm in the East Stand. The leading lights of our Academy, Tony Russ and Colin Osborne, will be there to give an insight to its running and aims. We also are hoping one or two of the Academy members will be there to give first hand accounts of what it’s like to be in the Academy. To book tickets, please either see Duncan in the bar today or email him on prof@quinssa.org.uk. The event is free to Quinssa members and £3 to others. The bar will be open, however there will be no food available.

The second big Quinssa event to plug is the balloon race. At the Sale game next week there will be a massive release of balloons at half time.  All the balloons will have owners and the one that gets the furthest gets a prize, so too does the person who returns the evidence. Barbara (she’s the one with the symbiotic relationship with the “Quins Official Supporter”!) will be going round selling the tickets for this and all the proceeds are going to Quins’ main charity the BPA. You will need to buy your tickets in advance to take part in this great fun event. I should add that the Quinssa committee have become weather experts in the last few weeks, so a winner from Lou in Australia is highly unlikely.

Back to more mundane matters and our next three coaches to away games. Bath on World Cup final day, leaving The Stoop at 7am, watching the game in the Swindon area then continuing on to the game and Gloucester the day after Boxing Day. Depending on when the Leeds Powergen cup tie is to be played, we will also try to run a coach for that game as well. If you’re interested in any of these games then please see me today (I normally loiter around the East Stand), email me on will@quinssa.org.uk or even call me 020 8643 2145. Payment is required for all coaches in advance. They are great fun and a very sociable way to travel to away games.

In closing can I add some news about a friendly west country club that will go unnamed. Last week they tried to get be to buy into their ground development, this week they refused to sell me a seat for a forthcoming game. Perhaps my money is only good for some things!

So have a good day, help the stewards out by being cooperative, respect the kickers and raise the roof.

Quinssa Chairman
