Quinssa ND1 Travel Guide
Cornish Pirates (formerly known as Penzance & Newlyn RFC)
Westholme, Alexandra Road, Penzance, Cornwall
(t) 0845 2703530
Where the club is: Penzance is right down in the south west corner of England in deepest Cornwall. Truro, where our match will be played, is a little nearer being midway between Newquay and Falmouth.
Club ground: The club have moved to a new ground in Truro this season, this is good news for us as it’s an hour less we have to travel. At the moment the ground is called the Cathedral School ground in Kenwyn, which is in the north west edge of Truro. However, their admin base and clubhouse are at Westholme which adjoins the Mennaye Field, which is where the 1st XV have been playing in previous seasons.
Position last year: Penzance fell away a bit at the end and finished fourth with 17 wins from 26 games. This year they are hoping to do a lot better!

How to get there:
Road: You are probably going to trek down the A30 then take the A39 into Truro. But it’s an awfully long drive and you need to plan it well and cater for plenty of breaks. At the moment there’s no plans for parking at the ground apart from coaches and for disabled drivers. A park and ride scheme will be operating from Carrick car parks and other designated places.
Rail: There’s a direct rail service from London Paddington to Truro with First Great Western, however as it takes nearly four and a half hours and it’s a Sunday game so you can’t get back that evening! Unless of course you book the over night sleeper which gets into Reading at about 4am and Paddington around 5am. Details are here http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/atyourservice/sleeper.php but you can’t book on-line.
Plane: Another option is flying to Plymouth (see the link in the Plymouth section) and driving or catching a train from there. The direct line with First Great Western takes about seventy minutes. Although we have to wait and see whether the connections match up. Another option is Newquay airport, see http://www.newquay-airport.co.uk/index.html, although connections look very iffy. Getting from Newquay airport to Truro looks difficult by train, you’ll have to change at Par for the onward leg and there are few trains that match up.
