Richard Langhorn Trust Survival Challenge
Quinssa member Vena Arnold completed the Richard Langhorn Trust Survival Challenge last weekend, she writes
“The RLT 48 hr SAS Survival Challenge began with the team, consisting of Messrs Copsey, Hyde, Ayrton, Arnold and Swayne, meeting up in the car park at a secret location in Herefordshire at 2:00 pm on Friday 7th October. Little did we know what trials and tribulations would be ahead during the next 48 hrs with Ken Hames and his team providing the challenges. We soon realised the theme for the weekend would be 'not to expect the expected'. The challenges began almost immediately building our own bivvie from plastic sheeting, twine and tree trunks. Throughout the next day, in wet conditions for most of the time, we covered approximately 9 miles running backwards, forwards and sideways, complete with backpacks. Challenges such as patrol shooting, low and high wires, assault course, 'blind' driving, observation post, conquering a 10ft wall (twice) and 'the tunnel'. The latter taking 30 mins in very close confinement, single file and in the dark. Very challenging! By Saturday evening the Quins team were placed 1st though closely challenged. Sunday we began our 'escape and evasion' complete with full backpacks AND our sleeping bags returned to us that morning. After 3 hours of running around the countryside we completed our mission and were captured and taken for interrogation. Having experienced being dragged under electric fences, thrown over hedges, yanked over 10 ft walls, pushed through streams, throwing myself into nettle beds and learning to skin rabbits and pheasant it was certainly an experience. Quins came in 5th overall and I felt very satisfied having completed all tasks without wimping out.
To everyone who gave sponsorship please accept my HUGE thanks. The generosity of Quins fans has been wonderful. To date with on and offline sponsorship I've reached a total of £1150 with all monies raised going to the Richard Langhorn Trust supporting disabled and disadvantaged children in a sporting environment.
Ken Hames new programme, Beyond Boundaries, can be seen Tuesdays BBC 9pm. A truly remarkable guy.”
